Makeup Trends of Today

This past week in makeup school we talked about makeup trends throughout the ages. This made me start thinking about makeup today and not only how it has changed from the 1920s, but what of the popular trends will stand the test of time to mark this decade? We all know the 70s and 80s had bright eyeshadow and pink blush, the 90s had the tiny brows and dark lined lips but as we move towards 2020 what will the 2010s be known for?

For sure I think brows will be a hot topic about makeup in the last decade. We have seen an emergence of "natural" fluffy brows and the "Instagram" brow. The photos below show the difference between the two. Cara Delevigne is a perfect example of the natural brow.

It's fluffy, messy, and looks like a tweezer has never been near it. It is definitely a far cry from the tiny pencil 90s brow. The second type of brow that was seen everywhere is the carved out "insta-brow". Brow pomade and concealer help to create this chiseled and definitely not unkempt look.

Along with brows the rise of beauty influencers have definitely shaped the last decade of beauty. Of course, there have always been influencers for our beauty standards but it is so saturated now with the ease of access to their daily lives. Jaclyn Hill, Jeffree Star, James Charles, Desi Perkins, Lipstick Nick, KathleenLights, Tati, and Kandee Johnson just barely scratch the surface of the beauty influencers that have risen to fame through YouTube in the beauty community. Not only do we see them on YouTube but also Instagram and in stores like Target, Ulta, Sephora and CVS. Their success in the makeup world shapes what we buy and how we do our makeup and I don't see any of that influence ending anytime soon.

Within the last decade, I also think that makeup has finally been seen as more of an art form. I do think we have James Charles to thank for a lot of this recognition because he so clearly makes art across his face. It takes skill to even just draw even wings for eyeliner. It's a form of expression and a way to create different personas and moods every day on the human face. I hope as time moves forward that makeup continues to grow into a true art form and becomes more of an acceptable form of expression for anyone who wants to pick up a blending brush.
